With a general notion that eSports did better than what it has in the previous years, from PUBG Mobile getting banned to Mortal being the first ever Indian to get nominated for Streamer of the Year, it has been an amazing ride… We at InsideSport bring to you the top 10 eSports news of 2020, from the year that it was.

–Valorant Launch

Valorant was launched on June 2, 2020. The game not only gave PC players a new game to enjoy but the game also opened another avenue for eSports with this title being added to the list of games eSports athletes play. Many CS:GO players across the globe were also seen making the shift to Valorant.

–Fortnite Removed From iOS and Android Platform

Apple and Google in early August pulled out Fortnite from the App Store and Google Play, respectively, after Epic Games introduced a new in-game payment system that would do away with the 30% fee certain developers are required to pay the company for every in-app purchase the players make. Epic Games had sued both Apple and Google for the same and took them to federal court.

— PUBGM Ban

On September 2, 2020, the government announced a ban on 118 Chinese apps, including PUBG Mobile that “are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, Defence of India, Security of State and Public Order”. PUBG Mobile officially took down its Indian servers on October 31, 2020.

Fearless And United-Guards (FAU-G) is an upcoming multiplayer battle royale mobile game. The game was announced by actor Akshay Kumar on September 4, just days after PUBG Mobile was banned in India. The game is being developed by nCore Games, which is headquartered in Bengaluru. The game is the most pre-registered game in a span of 24 hours on Play Store India.

— Apex Legends Announced for Mobile Phone

Apex Legends is Electronic Arts’ (EA) take on the battle royale format of gaming. The game is available on Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson, has decided to expand the game’s presence and announced the company is currently developing Apex Legends Mobile that could see its finishing touches by 2021, and the game could hit shores by 2022.

— Mortal Gets Nominated for Streamer of the Year Award

Indian YouTuber, Naman ‘Mortal’ Mathur, on July 23 became the first ever Indian YouTuber to get nominated for Esports Awards 2020 under the Streamer of the Year Award. The results for the game were announced in November 2020, and he bagged the second prize, losing to Spanish streamer, Ibai Llanos. Among the nominated were established streamers like Pokimane, Dr Lupo, etc.

The game of bluffing, lying, cheating and deceit– Among Us, was launched back in 2018. However, the game has taken off exponentially this year, with many big YouTubers across the globe…
