Shroud, Valkyrae, TSM Myth, Sykkuno were about to enjoy a game of Rust when a unforeseen DDoS attack ruined it for them.

With big names involved, attention is inevitable that attract a lot of viewers who tunes in to watch their favorite streamers join forces and play their favorite game. shroud, Valkyrae, TSM Myth and many other big names in Twitch planned to host a game of Rust that will attract tons of viewers and also bid farewell to 2020 with a banger of a stream, but all of that went in vain when the server was DDoSed by hackers.

What Is DDoS?

“A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic. DDoS attacks achieve effectiveness by utilizing multiple compromised computer systems as sources of attack traffic. Exploited machines can include computers and other networked resources such as IoT devices. From a high level, a DDoS attack is like an unexpected traffic jam clogging up the highway, preventing regular traffic from arriving at its destination.” according to Cyber Security company Cloudflare.

What happened to the game server?

This is where things get confusing as many suggest it to be caused by the tons of viewers trying to get into the server to get a chance at playing with their favorite streamer while other suggest a DDoS attack on the server by hackers.

DDoS attacks are very common and hosts should have been careful while launching servers. DDoS attacks often occur in esports events where hackers find it funny for a game to get delayed with no actual gain. Admins/hosts need to be extra cautions while dealing with such stuff where details about the server should be kept close as smallest of leaks will expose the server to hundreds of hackers hungry for attention.
