What is the current status on Project F, the MMORPG based on the League of Legends universe? Here is everything we know so far.

What is Project F?

While it was only briefly shown, Project F is speculated to be an action RPG with a multiplayer dungeon crawler experience. It’s basically supposed to be a way of exploring the world of Runeterra like other famous titles such as Genshin Impact.

It was initially announced during the 10-year anniversary edition of Riot Pls, alongside games like Project A (VALORANT), Project L, and Legends of Runeterra, just to name a few. While it’s still not confirmed to be an RPG, it would be missing game genre that Riot hasn’t covered yet, as they are looking to extend their LoL universe.

When will Project F be released?

Unfortunately, there is no official release date for the game yet. Despite being in development for nearly 4 years already, we still haven’t gotten any major official updates on the game. That said, we know that the game was being worked on surely in 2022, as confirmed by Greg Street, former EP of the MMO project at Riot Games. Even though he’s not with the company, anymore, it should still be a good enough sign that the game company is still pouring resources into the title.

This was also confirmed by Katie Chironis, lead world designer on one of Riot’s R&D teams when she tweeted about some job openings for what is supposed to be Project F (a PvE game).

I don’t tweet about new roles very often right now b/c we’ve been filling them fast, but my R&D team at riot is hiring again. we’re looking for gameplay engineers experienced in Unreal who understand networked gameplay well. If this is you, please DM, would love to chat!

What will the game look like?

Unlike the MOBA version of the game, Project F should have top-tier graphics while exploring the various regions of Runeterra. In the short clip published by Riot, we saw Blitzcrank and Ezreal fighting some mobs. With that in mind, it’s likely that players will be able to choose their characters and jump into the League universe with them. Each champion/character will have its own abilities and special effects.

In addition, it is already known that there will be different classes and it’s likely that they are going to be divided just like the classes used in the MOBA.  Therefore, we should be able to see Tanks, Mages, Fighters, Slayers, and Controllers, with potential subgroups also being implemented.

Greg Street previously mentioned that there will be raids and they are supposed to be the most important part of the game, just like in other games of the same genre.

What champions can we play on Project F?

Unless Riot decides to scrap their plans, we should expect champions appearing in the teaser such as Blitzcrank and Ezreal in the game. It’s also likely that Riot will look to add some of the most popular League champions like Lux, Akali, Yasuo, and many more. That said, there is still no confirmation on how many and which characters the game will have.

Which Regions Will be in the LoL MMO?

When it comes to RPG games, one of the most important aspects is the ability to explore an open world and find out the ins and outs of the different maps and regions. Considering that the League universe is based on Runeterra, we will likely find the following regions on Project F:

  • Bandle City
  • Bilgewater
  • Demacia
  • Ionia
  • Ixtal
  • Noxus
  • Piltover
  • Shadow Isles
  • Shurima
  • Targon
  • The Freljord
  • Zaun

Among the regions, however, the Void is missing because it’s technically a place that cannot be accessed. Will it be implemented regardless as a special map? We’re going to have to wait on more details to find out.
