Destiny 2 Joins League of Competitive eSports and Gaming

word-image-119

Destiny is a video game franchise that divides opinions in the gaming community like no other. It either gets love or hate. Regardless of anyone’s opinion, Destiny’s sequel Destiny 2 has become one of the most popular AAA games to hit the market ever since its release in 2017. In the five days after its launch, Destiny 2 recorded $325 million in sales. According to gaming statistics trackers at Gamstat, 21 million players played Destiny 2 on PlayStation alone in the past year. Furthermore, Destiny 2 and its developer, Bungie, have bagged several high-profile nominations and awards, including a nomination for Best Community Support at The 2020 Game Awards, which is a testament to its burgeoning community. As a result of its growing popularity, it’s becoming one of the fastest-growing games in the world of eSports, and you’re about to learn why.

Why Destiny Joining Esports is a No-brainer

Competitive online gaming or eSports has snowballed in popularity – and profitability — over the last few years and is only expected to grow. In 2016, over 280 million viewers tuned in to eGame different tournaments, from League of Legends to Call of Duty. Growing from $325 million in 2015, the industry generated global revenue of $1.1 billion in 2020, which is an over 15.7% growth rate from $950 million recorded in the previous year. Three-quarters of the revenue recorded in 2020 was from sponsorship and media rights, showing the industry’s global appeal.

One of the attractions of Destiny 2 is how players find their way through the gaming journey. It is full of surprises with never-ending adventures in space, lots of rewards, a great storyline, plus instant feedback from attentive creators. Entering the eSports market with these unique selling points is bound to produce more magic for gamers, developers, and investors alike.

The Rise of Destiny

The truth is, it hasn’t always been a smooth ride for the franchise, which first arrived on the scene in 2014. The earliest version was initially criticized for its poor character development, playability, bugs, repetitiveness, incoherent storyline among other flaws. But Bungie worked steadfastly to fix the issues with every update. Seven years later, the much-improved Destiny 2 is among the biggest MMOG (massively multiplayer online games) around and has been a disrupter in the downloadable game industry.

Destiny offers players the right blend of PvP and PvE map options, unpredictable gameplay, and weapon balance, hence the huge following. Merging the large-yet-close-knit console gaming community with PC-dominant eSports is sure to take both communities to a higher level with bigger events like Dota 2 and CSGO.

The eventual rise of Destiny 2 comes as no surprise to experienced gamers. The developer has built an excellent reputation with the success of Halo. However, it does…
